Welcome to Amovita's November e-news!

AASW CONFERENCE TOWNSVILLE

I have just arrived back from beautiful Townsville having had the privledge of speaking at the Australian Association of Social Workers Conference.

It was a great opportunity and privledge to meet with 200 of Queensland's most emminent professionals from all over Australia, New Zealand and Japan.

It is a unique opportunity to bring together executive professionals, clinical practitioners, researchers and academics to discuss the challenges in the industry from mental health to climate change.

I must say getting some exercise by venturing along the Strand in Townsville was lovely most evenings and there is nothing quite like being near the sea air.

I also look forward to presenting at the Family Relationship Services Australia this week on the Gold Coast. Yes another fantastic busy week at Amovita.

The Accidental Counsellor

Knowing what to say and do when you are approached by someone in distress can feel overwhelming when you are not equipped with the specialist knowledge and skills to respond efficiently and effectively.

By virtue of your role at work, there will be times when you may be the first point of contact for someone in crisis and needing immediate assistance or for someone just needing a bit of comfort or consoling. In community and human services we often fall into the roll of the ‘Accidental Counsellor’ without a professional framework in which to work with our clients.

Even without a formal qualification in counselling it is important to have a tool kit of counselling techniques and questioning frameworks to provide the necessary support to clients when they are anxious, angry, experiencing grief and loss or a challenging time in their life......read more

100,000 Hours of Sleep!

So, I’m 30. This is my 30th year on earth, I’ve lived approximately 10,978 days, taken around 316 billion breaths and slept for around 100,000 hours (how nice does that sound!).

As I commence my 30th trip around the sun, I’m reflecting on where I am now and how I got here; No, I don’t mean sitting in my lounge room, where Cranky the Wonder Cat is having his usual daytime nap and I’m surrounded by photo’s, objects and things that I’ve gathered over the years – I mean how did I become who I am?

As I sit and think of all the things I thought I’d be, have accomplished or be doing, I realised that I haven’t really ticked any of the virtual boxes that have floated around in my head.

I’m not married, I don’t have kids, I don’t own a house, I haven’t visited the UK or Europe, my butt is nowhere close to fitting into a size 10 pair of jeans, I haven’t invented something or seen a shooting star, I’ve never been a contestant on a TV show or been to New York, I’m not fluent in another language and I’ve never really understood politics.

So that’s a few of the things I thought I would have achieved, and as I was considering why I haven’t achieved those things, it dawned on me……read more

November Book of the Month: The Four Agreements

Everything we do is based on agreements we have made – agreements with ourselves, with other people, with life. But the most important agreements are the ones we make with ourselves.

In these agreements we tell ourselves who we are, how to behave, what is possible, what is impossible. One single agreement is not such a problem, but we have many agreements that come from fear, deplete our energy, and diminish our self-worth.

In these agreements we tell ourselves who we are, how to behave, what is possible, what is impossible….read more

What They're saying about Professional Supervision

“Thank you so much for an enlightening and most valuable work shop, I absolutely believe professional supervision is such an important process and have commenced implementing regular and structured professional supervision for my team with expectations that this will in time transform my support workers to become a more cohesive team, more confident, better skilled, better aligned with our organisational values/philosophies and feel far more supported within our workplace.

Being a “glass half full” kind of person I see this process as a “must do and do well” tool for all work places, keep at it Tracey as the work you do is very important!”

Liz Edwards – Support Worker Team Leader, Spiritus
